VISION ZERO WASTE SEMINAR: Converting waste into opportunity

Date: 7 June 2018
Venue: Onyx
Time: 09:00
Facilitator: Gordon Brown
Zero waste means industrial symbiosis: when one company’s unused or residual resources (materials, energy, water, waste, assets, logistics, expertise, etc.) are used by another. This results in mutual economic, social and environmental benefi ts. Let no waste go to waste! South Africa currently generates 108 million tons of waste (resource value: R25.2 billion) but recycles only 10%, when the economic value of additional recycling or recovery potentially amounts to R36 billion a year. The Vision Zero Waste seminar looks into how this gold can be mined to its full potential, at a business level – including best practices in resource use, management, engineering, design and job creation – as well as at a city level, where integrated waste management holds the key to sustainable, environmentally friendly development.
