Senior Manager: Integrated Development Planning (IDP), eThekwini Municipality
Puvendra Akkiah is a Town and Regional Planner with more than 10 years’ experience in Southern, Central Africa and Western Africa. He is a specialist in the preparation, implementation and management of planning and development, geographic information systems (GIS) and database projects. He also has extensive experience in land use planning, socio-economic studies, database design, aerial photography analysis preliminary and feasibility studies, technical/field surveys, statutory planning, and conceptual layout design.
He has extensive international experience, including in Mozambique’s Biera-Dondo Structure Plan, the Manzini Structure Plan in eSwatini and as the Lead Technical Consultant for the World Bank-funded capital investment programme in the Gambia. He is also a Coordinator for the Strategic Planning Committee of United Cities Local Governments (UCLG), and sits on the Agenda Committee for the Inclusive Cities Network of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum.
In his current position, Mr Akkiah prepares and develops the city’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP), assists in developing local area planning for the Back of Port in Durban, advises on the strategic long-term planning for the municipality, assists in facilitating workshops on strategic planning, and presents at various master classes and conferences.
He is currently mentoring 4 mid-sized towns in Namibia on strategic development planning and has had experience in mentoring Mzuzu town in Malawion strategic visioning and planning.
