Michael joined the Marine Stewardship Council in 2010 and for the past five years has held the position of Programme Manager for the MSC’s outreach work in Africa, the Middle East and south Asia.
He has a Masters degree in Ichthyology and Fisheries Science from Rhodes University, where he focused his research on conservation biology. After his studies he spent several years in the UK where his experience ranged from providing support to London’s recycling sector to conducting seasonal salmon and trout surveys in the streams and rivers of rural Wales.
In his current position he’s tasked with growing the MSC’s certification and ecolabelling programme in the region – a job that requires both an understanding of sustainability fundamentals as well as a pragmatic approach to balancing very different stakeholder interests.
