Msizi Mkhize is a Pretoria-based architect with over 15 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Tshwane University of Technology, a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Pretoria, and a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Leadership from Yeungnam University in South Korea. Msizi’s research focuses on Smart Cities and social issues in South Africa, with an emphasis on identifying opportunities for architectural interventions. Recently, he presented at the Africa Smart Cities Conference on June 4, 2024, comparing the Smart City case studies of Songdo and Pretoria. His presentation explored how lessons from Songdo, South Korea’s first smart city, could be applied to retrofit Pretoria, a post-apartheid model city. He proposed solutions for architects and spatial practitioners to reverse engineer spatial segregation and create inclusive spaces. Additionally, Msizi has examined and lectured at his alma mater in design and construction.
