Qualifications

I am a South African Registered Professional Natural Scientist (SACNASP) with an MSc with distinction in Ecology from University of the Witwatersrand, Advanced Social Development certificate from the University of Cambridge and an Advanced Management Programme certificate from GIBBS Business School. I am also a certified Water Efficiency Professional with a Measurement and Verification certificate (in training), as well as a qualified CWEP Trainer for the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).

Experience

  • My career started in 1998 at Anglo Coal undertaking rehabilitation research and through several operational and central services roles evolved into management of the divisional environmental portfolio for the business.
  • In 2008, I moved to Anglo American Corporate as technical specialist for the development and implementation of the Anglo American Environment Group standards.
  • In 2009, after company re-structuring I became Anglo American Group Water Manager focused on development and implementation of water policy, strategy, standards globally. During this time I was the business board representative for International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) and was elected as a council member for the Water Institute for South Africa (WISA).
  • In 2015 I became an independent consultant for my own company with a focus on sustainable water management, water business case and efficiency solutions.
  • In 2018 I joined the MSA Group as their Environmental Services Head of Department, a role I still hold.

Recent Successes

  • 2018 to current – Delivered key water projects for several international clients that included Water Conservation and Demand Management, Water Strategies and Management Plans. Have managed the MSA Environmental Department for 2 ½ years and doubled revenue in this time.
  • 2015 to 2018 – Operated my own company, Garner Sustainability Consulting Services. Delivered several turnkey solutions in the Financial, Industrial and Water sectors. Re-voted onto WISA Council & became Chair for the WISA Mine Water Division. Achieved certification in Water Management and Measurement and Verification through AEE. Advisor to the South African Chamber of Mines on Water Conservation and Water Demand Management in Mining.
  • 2014 – Delivered the Anglo American plc Water Efficiency Target 4 years ahead of schedule. Implemented the Group Water Governance Requirements and programmes. Worked closely with International Council for Metals and Mining (ICMM) on their water strategy.
  • 2013 – Implemented water efficiency reviews with additional ~29Mm3 potential water savings identified, case, nominated for Group Sustainability award for work done in 2011/12.
  • 2012 – Completion of Anglo American Water Best Practice Guideline, delivery on 50% of the Group’s Water Efficiency Target (WETT), established the Anglo American South Africa regional water engagement and advocacy strategy, became a Member of the INAP Board.
  • 2011 – Development and implementation of the Anglo American Water Management Standard and established the Group Water Efficiency Target (WETT), Water efficiency written into CEO performance contracts for 2012.
  • 2010 – Developed the Anglo American Group Water Strategy, Policy and overall water programme. Development of Water Technology Pathway for the Group.
  • 2009 – Completed and rolled out the Anglo American Group Environmental Standards across global operations.

Hobbies and interests

  • 4×4 Overlanding within the SADC region with a wildlife, hiking and birding focus.
  • Reading and enjoying a good movie as down time after a good walk with the dogs.
  • Home renovations and DIY projects from gardening to plumbing to carpentry.
