Food & Trees for Africa

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a leading Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation that addresses food security and environmental sustainability. Our core purpose is to improve lives and landscapes towards healthy people on a healthier planet. We have a large and diverse programme portfolio with projects active across South Africa since 1990.

Our vision is one where everyone has access to nutritious, naturally grown food that promotes health and happiness. We aim to help build a society made up of communities where our ecosystems are preserved and an urban balance of biodiversity is restored through tree planting. This is a world where the people of Southern Africa are provided a sustainable livelihood that does not negatively affect the environment. We envision a sustainable future that provides for everyone, as the effects of man-made climate change are halted and reversed. Our vision works toward a point in time where people are educated, understand, and respect the link between the environment, themselves and their prosperity.

Our initiatives combat climate change and promote greening, effective natural resource management, organic farming and food security, and sustainable enterprise development. Through FTFA, over 4.7 million trees have been planted, thousands of schools and community gardens have been developed and hundreds of market gardens and farms are supported. We have created strategic greenbelts in major city centres and townships across the country and reforested key ecosystem areas. We aim to transform these areas into rich food forests, teeming with life and biodiversity.

Our ethos is one of efficiency, transparency, and accountability. We run our nonprofit like a business / social enterprise and continue to innovate in the space. FTFA has more than 33 years experience in the South African Social Development industry and is a pioneer within the fields of climate change response and food security. We understand what it takes to achieve real, long-term sustainability which makes a positive difference to the lives of all South Africans. This approach has resulted in us being one of the most impactful social development organisations on the continent.
